Complimentary Gratitude Journal

This 2-week  gratitude journal includes tips and best practices to help you keep the spirit of gratitude alive and fresh (see below).

Why Gratitude?

Gratitude magnifies positive emotions.  Yet, according to research, positive emotions wear off quickly. Our emotional system likes newness, novelty and change. This journaling and practice can get “trite” and “boring” quickly if left unchecked. Professor Robert Emmons at UC Davis suggest that:

“… We adapt to positive life circumstances so that before too long, the new car, the new spouse, the new house—they don’t feel so new and exciting anymore. But gratitude makes us appreciate the value of something, and when we appreciate the value of something, we extract more benefits from it; we’re less likely to take it for granted.  In effect, I think gratitude allows us to participate more in life. We notice the positives more, and that magnifies the pleasures you get from life.”

Challenges to gratitude

Just because gratitude is good doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Practicing gratitude can be  in conflict with ingrained ways of thinking. There are no miracles. There are no long-term quick fixes for happiness. According to University of Michigan psychologist Christopher Peterson “… if you become a more grateful person and you add those exercises to your repertoire, you’ll be different six months or a year from now. But if you say okay, I’m done with this and I’m going back to the way I was, it’ll just have been a six-week high. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not going to permanently change you.”

And that’s what researchers are discovering, time after time, that an “attitude of gratitude” can literally changes your life.  Kinda worth taking a shot at it, eh?
