Helps take the angst out of Marketing and Sales

Building Self Confidence helps sales- Surprise!

Sandy head shot April 2013

I’ve always been fascinated with the sales profession. Since one out of every nine American worker works in sales* I’m curious as to why some sales people are more confident that others. So, when my dear friend Andrea Driessen (Founder of “No More Boring Meetings” sent me a link to a TEDxRyersonU talk by Dr. Ivan Joseph -” The Skill of Self Confidence”, I immediately settled in for a watch.

Dr Joseph’s talk resonates because as he so simply states – there’s no magic bullet for gaining self confidence but rather it’s a practice. It’s how we talk to ourselves and practice esteem-able behavior, over and over again. It’s almost insulting in it’s elemental truth.  It’s not as “sexy” as researching the latest brain chemistry theory which confirms why we are the way we are.

In my past, I consulted with small business owners /sales people, etc., I’d  hear things like: “I hate selling”; “The economy is sluggish”; ” No one is buying”. Hearing those comments sucks the air right out of the room. It’s boring. Sorry, but it’s true. Truth? People are buying – they just aren’t buying from them. It seems easier to stay stuck in the practice of negativity, poor self esteem and  self confidence. It’s not as much fun to practice new behavior every day and work on projecting a new vibe. Sometimes it’s lonely because it usually means no nay saying around the proverbial water cooler. But the payoff? Priceless. Beats the blues any day.
